Five persons were yesterday hospitalized at the Jos University Teaching hospital (JUTH) following the use of gas canisters by police officers on protesting workers of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) of JUTH in Jos, the Plateau State capital
Our correspondent who visited the hospital reports that the persons hospitalized included Mathew Nyam, Nakuza Isreal Daniel, Nanlop Audu and Susan Joseph of catering department while Juliana Ibrahim, an attendant, also sustained injuries. The protest which started peacefully on Monday suddenly turned violent when police officers tried to disperse the workers who had occupied the main entrance of the hospital but failed. The workers were protesting the non-implementation of the agreement signed by the hospital management in June and the failure of the hospital management to pay their April and May salaries.
Chairman of the Union, Mustapha Kabiru, said, “Only 260 people were paid in April and 270 in May out of 2,024 and the CMD is saying that he is under the directive of the federal government on no work, no pay but the circular on the police only came on June 22nd, that is after we had called off the strike.”
Kabiru accused the assistant police commissioner, operation for giving the order for the use of gas canisters directly on workers and called on the federal government to shut down the hospital, adding, “We cannot guarantee what will happen tomorrow because our people have been molested.”
Police Public Relations Officer Tyopev Matthias Terna asked for time to verify the situation but few minutes after, his phone was switched off.
