Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a gross violation of girls' and women's human rights that is still practiced in at least 30 countries. 200 million women are suffering the consequences as recorded in 2016.
A product of gender inequality, FGM attempts to control women's sexuality. Discourses in favour of the mutilation are based on the idea of preserving purity and modesty, with women coerced by social pressure and fear of retaliation.
Extremely brutal and harmful, this violation leads to severe complications that can result in lifelong chronic pains, infections and death. The abandonment of FGM can only be achieved through the education of practicing populations and the continued efforts to empower women.
Be an advocate for these women, teach your community, take action to #EndFGM.
