Six states of the federation have benefitted from over $15 million provided by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under its Strengthening Health Organisation through Private Sector (SHOPS) aimed at promoting family planning activities.
SHOPS’ Chief of Party, Mrs. Ayodele Iroko who disclosed this at a ceremony in Lafia to mark the end of the project dissemination in the country stated that health personnel in 44 private facilities in Nasarawa State were trained on improved quality family planning methods under the project.
Iroko added that the project was aimed at building the capacity of the private health sector in the country towards improving the quality of family planning services and increase access to such services.
The explained that the USAID-funded five-year project (2011-2016) was executed in 6ix states of the federation including; Abia, Benue, Edo, Kaduna, Lagos and Nasarawa states.
She said that for Nasarawa state, the shop Programme was executed in nine local government areas targeting Doctors, Nurses and Community pharmacists.
According to her, the beneficiaries were trained in different family planning methods and maternal and child health related issues.
She said the training was extensive as it exposed them to all the methods of family planning as well as business management in order to ensure effective service delivery
The chief of party said the benefitting facilities were also trained on good record keeping aimed at facilitating accurate data collection.
“We built their capacity on what we called method mix, which strengthens a particular private health provider to be able to provide every method of family planning services.
“We are sure that method mix is available in all the 44 private facilities trained in Nasarawa state and any client who goes in there for any method of family planning would not be turned away but access quality method of choice,” She said.
She added that 115 community pharmacists were also trained on family wellness in order to effectively counsel clients to enable them make informed choices amongst the family planning methods.
