Anambra NMA Moves To Improve Cancer Treatment, Research

The Anambra state chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) says it plans to construct a multi-million Naira cancer treatment and research centre towards improving management of cancer cases in the state.

Newly-elected state Chairman of the association, Dr. Jude Onyekwelu, announced this in his acceptance speech on Sunday in Awka.

Onyekwelu said when completed, the centre would alleviate the sufferings of cancer patients in the state, adding that “the centre will develop better management of the disease and reverse medical tourism.’’

The NMA chairman however, commended the immediate past executive of the association and Gov. Willie Obiano for facilitating the acquisition of the parcel of land for the project at Isiagu near Awka.

“Towards the realisation of this dream, Gov. Willie Obiano has already pledged N10 million. We earnestly look forward to the early release of this money, which we can use to kick-start the project,’’ Onyekwelu said.

He said the new state NMA executive would partner the state government to ensure improved health of the people and build on the foundation laid by the past association executives.

Onyekuelu expressed dismay over the incessant attacks and threats on doctors by the general public when they lose their loved ones.

“If any doctor was negligent in his duty that might have led to the death of any patient, there are proper avenues for seeking redress and not by harassing, arresting, detaining or dehumanising such doctor.

“Doctors stake their lives and safety to render healthcare, but the system sees it as obligatory service that does not require compensation and appreciation,’’ he asserted.

Earlier, the immediate past Chairman, Dr. Emmanuel Monago, expressed confidence in the ability of his successor to deliver on his mandate.

He called on the members of the association to give maximum support to new executive.

Other elected executive members are Dr. Jane Ezeonu as vice chairman; Dr. Dubem Awachie, as secretary; Dr. Augustine Enemuo as assistant secretary and Dr. Onyinye Nwazor as financial secretary.

Also elected are Dr. Duru Ugochukwu as treasurer; Dr. Ikenna Melifeonwu as social secretary and Dr. Ndubuisi Arua as publicity secretary.
