The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) Abuja is a 500-bed specialty hospital offering world-class comprehensive diagnostics and treatment in oncology, cardiovascular, and haematological care, and general medical and surgical services, along with top notch research and education. The AMCE will provide exceptional care to people on the African continent, regardless of their financial means. Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Chemical Pathology Scientist

Location: Abuja

 

Job Purpose

The Chemical Pathology Scientist will be responsible for performing complex diagnostic tests and analyses on blood and other bodily fluids to support the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.

The role holder will operate advanced laboratory instrumentation, ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results, and adhere to strict quality control and safety protocols.

This role is crucial in providing physicians with the data needed for high-quality, patient-centered care.

Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities

Laboratory Analysis & Operations:

  • Perform precise biochemical analyses on blood, urine, and other body fluids using automated analysers and manual methods.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain advanced laboratory equipment in line with established protocols.
  • Prepare and monitor reagents and standards, ensuring quality and stability.
  • Validate, verify, and interpret test results, investigating any discrepancies or anomalies.

Quality Management & Compliance:

  • Adhere to the laboratory’s Quality Management System (QMS) and international standards.
  • Participate in internal and external quality assurance and proficiency testing schemes.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of test procedures, results, and quality control records.
  • Contribute to the validation, development, and implementation of new test methods and technologies.

Clinical Collaboration & Support:

  • Work closely with clinical biochemists and physicians to interpret complex results and provide technical advice.
  • Communicate urgent and critical findings promptly to the healthcare team.
  • Participate in clinical audits and multidisciplinary meetings as required.

Safety & Administration:

  • Comply with all biosafety and chemical safety protocols in the handling of specimens and reagents.
  • Monitor and manage inventory of laboratory supplies to ensure uninterrupted workflow.
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior laboratory staff and staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Pathology, Medical Laboratory Science, Biochemistry, or a related field.
  • Full registration with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) or an equivalent international licensing body.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in a high-volume clinical chemistry laboratory.
  • Proven expertise in operating and maintaining major automated clinical chemistry and immunoassay analyzers.
  • Strong knowledge of quality control practices, data analysis, and result interpretation.
  • Proficiency in using Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
