Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.
We are recruiting to fill the position below:
Job Title: Chemical Pathology Technician
Location: Abuja
Job Purpose
The Chemical Pathology Technician will perform a wide range of complex diagnostic tests on blood, serum, and other body fluids to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
The role holder will operate sophisticated laboratory instrumentation, ensure the accuracy and reliability of results, and maintain strict adherence to quality control and safety protocols.
Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities
Laboratory Testing and Operations:
- Perform accurate and timely analytical tests in chemical pathology including clinical chemistry, endocrinology, toxicology, and therapeutic drug monitoring.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain advanced automated analyzers and other laboratory equipment.
- Prepare reagents and samples according to established standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Recognize and troubleshoot basic instrument malfunctions and technical problems, escalating complex issues as needed.
Quality Assurance and Compliance:
- Adhere strictly to the laboratory’s quality management system and safety policies.
- Perform and document daily quality control procedures to ensure the precision and accuracy of test results.
- Participate in internal audits and external proficiency testing schemes.
- Ensure full compliance with all relevant national and international accreditation standards.
Operational Support:
- Manage laboratory inventory and supplies for the chemical pathology section.
- Process and handle specimens appropriately to ensure sample integrity.
- Collaborate with phlebotomists and clinicians to ensure proper sample collection and handling.
- Assist in the development and validation of new test methods and procedures.
Data Management & Reporting:
- Accurately enter and report test results into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Communicate critical and abnormal results to clinicians in a timely manner as per established protocols.
- Ensure patient confidentiality and data security at all times.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (BMLS, B.Sc., or equivalent) in Medical Laboratory Science, Biochemistry, or a related field from a recognized institution.
- Must be duly registered with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) and possess a valid practicing license.
- Certification from a recognized international body is a distinct advantage.
Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in a high-volume chemical pathology laboratory.
- Proven experience operating and maintaining modern clinical chemistry analyzers
- Solid understanding of quality control principles, laboratory safety, and good laboratory practice (GLP).
- Proficiency in using Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and basic computer applications.
