Job Title: Colorectal / Colonoscopy Surgeon

Job Purpose
- The Colorectal/Colonoscopy Surgeon will be responsible for providing specialised care in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of colorectal diseases and conditions requiring colonoscopy procedures.
- This role is critical to improving patient outcomes by delivering expert surgical interventions and non-surgical treatment plans while adhering to the highest standards of medical ethics and clinical excellence.
- The role holder will work in a multidisciplinary environment, contributing to the overall care pathway for patients with colorectal conditions, including cancer, inflammatory bowel diseases, diverticular diseases, and other gastrointestinal disorders.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Clinical Procedures & Surgery:
- Perform advanced diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy procedures, including polypectomy, mucosal resection, and stricture dilation.
- Conduct complex surgical operations for colorectal conditions, including laparoscopic and open resections for cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and diverticular disease.
- Manage emergency colorectal conditions such as obstruction, perforation, and massive lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding.
- Utilize minimally invasive techniques to reduce patient morbidity, enhance recovery, and shorten hospital stays.
Patient Care and Advocacy:
- Evaluate patient medical history, symptoms, and diagnostic test results to develop personalized surgical and non-surgical care plans.
- Educate patients and their families on surgical procedures, risks, benefits, and post-operative care to promote informed decision-making.
- Obtain informed consent for all procedures, respecting patient autonomy and ensuring ethical care.
- Monitor patient progress and manage post-operative care, adjusting treatment plans as needed to ensure optimal recovery and outcomes.
Diagnostic and Multidisciplinary Collaboration:
- Interpret and correlate endoscopic findings with radiological imaging (CT, MRI, PET/CT) and histopathology to ensure accurate diagnosis and staging.
- Lead and actively participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings with oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists to coordinate comprehensive patient care.
- Provide expert consultation to other healthcare professionals on the management of complex colorectal cases.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Prepare detailed and accurate operative, endoscopic, and discharge reports to communicate critical information to the healthcare team.
- Document surgical protocols and techniques used to ensure reproducibility and facilitate clinical audit.
- Review and verify all patient records and reports for accuracy, assuming full responsibility for clinical documentation.
Research and Education:
- Conduct or participate in clinical trials and research to advance colorectal surgery and oncology knowledge.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals to contribute to the global medical literature.
- Develop educational materials and mentor junior surgeons, residents, and other healthcare professionals to facilitate knowledge transfer and skills development.
- Engage in continuous professional development and attend international conferences to stay abreast of surgical advancements and enhance clinical practice.
Qualifications
- Medical Degree (MBBS, MBChB, or equivalent) from a recognised institution.
- Completion of an accredited residency programme in General Surgery.
- Fellowship in Colorectal Surgery (e.g., from the West African College of Surgeons (WACS), American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), or equivalent international body).
- Valid medical license and registration with the relevant medical council (e.g., MDCN).
- Membership of relevant professional associations (e.g., Nigerian Society for Colorectal Disorders (NSCRD), or equivalent).
- Consultant-level experience in Colorectal Surgery (7 years or more post-completion of specialty training and certification).
- Proven expertise in a high volume of diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy procedures.
- Extensive experience in performing complex open and laparoscopic colorectal resections for both benign and malignant diseases.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex cases, including re-do surgeries and pelvic floor disorders.
- Familiarity with Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols.
- Prior experience in supervising, teaching, or mentoring junior medical staff is preferred.
- Evidence of research publication and participation in clinical trials is highly desirable.
