The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) Abuja is a 500-bed specialty hospital offering world-class comprehensive diagnostics and treatment in oncology, cardiovascular, and haematological care, and general medical and surgical services, along with top notch research and education. The AMCE will provide exceptional care to people on the African continent, regardless of their financial means. Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Diagnostic Nurse

Location: Abuja

 

Job Purpose

The Diagnostic Nurse will provide expert clinical and patient-focused support within the diagnostic imaging department.

This role is pivotal in ensuring patient safety, comfort, and understanding before, during, and after diagnostic procedures.

The role holder will collaborate with radiologists, technologists, and other clinicians to facilitate accurate and efficient diagnostic workflows, administer contrast media, monitor patient responses, and uphold the highest standards of care in a dynamic imaging environment.

Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities

Clinical & Procedural Support:

  • Assess patients prior to diagnostic procedures (e.g., MRI, CT, Ultrasound, Interventional Radiology), reviewing medical history, allergies, and contraindications.
  • Administer intravenous contrast media and medications as prescribed, monitoring for any adverse reactions.
  • Monitor patient vital signs and physiological responses throughout procedures, providing immediate nursing intervention if required.
  • Provide skilled nursing care during image-guided biopsies and minimally invasive procedures.
  • Ensure all procedures are performed in compliance with established safety protocols and clinical guidelines.

Patient Interaction and Education:

  • Serve as the primary clinical point of contact for patients and families within the diagnostic suite, explaining procedures and alleviating anxiety.
  • Obtain informed consent for procedures involving contrast media or intervention.
  • Educate patients on pre- and post-procedural care instructions.
  • Advocate for patient needs and ensure a compassionate, dignified care experience.

Administrative & Safety Compliance:

  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).
  • Manage inventory of nursing and emergency supplies within the diagnostic suites.
  • Adhere strictly to infection control, radiation safety, and hospital policy protocols.
  • Participate in incident reporting and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and departmental efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid practicing license.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) or equivalent.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of post-registration nursing experience.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a critical care, emergency department, or diagnostic imaging setting is highly preferred.
  • Proven experience in intravenous cannulation and administration of IV medications.
  • Proficiency in using Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems.
  • Strong understanding of patient safety principles and emergency response protocols.
  • Excellent assessment, communication, and patient education skills.
