NNEWI- TENSION and anger have enveloped the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, NAUTH Nnewi, and the entire Nnewi community following the alleged kidnap on Tuesday evening of Dr Cornelius Onuigbo, a medical doctor attached to the hospital.
Dr Onuigbo, who is of the Urology Department of NAUTH, was said to have been abducted by the gunmen in front of his house in Nnewi while coming back from work.
Vanguard gathered that Dr Onuigbo, a Urologist, was accosted at the gate of his house in Nnewi, by his abductors who were said to have trailed him up to the gate of his house.
Sources in the area said the armed men double-crossed him with their vehicle as he was about to enter the gate of his house, ordered him to enter into their vehicle and whisked him away to yet to be yet-to-be-known destination.
One of the sources told Vanguard, that “Dr Onuigbo was rounded up by some armed men, suspected to be kidnappers, as he was about entering into the gate of his residence. As they double-crossed him, they had few conversations with him after which, they ordered him to enter into their vehicle before they drove off the scene.
“It is not yet clear the motive of his abduction, but from the way the abductors behaved while they had the short conversation with him, it was reasonable to conclude that they were kidnappers because he is not a politician and one will be wondering what could be the motive of abducting the doctor if not for ransom.”
The abduction of Dr. Onuigbo who is described as a quiet gentle man and friendly with patients, has generated tension and anger in NAUTH, as people who know him are angry complaining that doctors who are saving the lives of the people, including the gunmen are now gradually being subjected to the traumatic experience of the activities of kidnappers.
Vanguard also gathered that since the doctor’s abduction yesterday evening, there is no information of his whereabouts or any contact made by his abductors to his family, but was told that his family has been restless to hear from him or his abductors.
The Head of Corporate Affairs of NAUTH confirmed the abduction. “The institution is aware of the incident and we are doing the needful. That is all I can say for now”.
Also contacted the Public Relations Officer PPRO, of Anambra State Police Command, Ikenga Tochukwu, a Superintendent of Police, also confirmed the incident, saying that the command is aware of the matter and has fully mobilised for the release of the victim.
