Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance (NTCA), yesterday, stated that the implementation of graphic health warnings policy would save no fewer than 11,744 Nigerians yearly from untimely deaths.
Programme Officer, Chibuike Nwokorie, who briefed reporters in Abuja, claimed that 32,608 others would also be saved from illnesses arising from consumption of tobacco products.
He said the country would equally be saved N6,745,786 billion in healthcare cost yearly if the preventive measures are strictly adhered to by regulatory and law enforcement agencies.
Nwokorie clarified that the projections were based on a recent study by the institute of clinical effectiveness and health policy in collaboration with the centre for the study of the economies of Africa, reiterating the fact that graphic health warnings are effective in reducing tobacco uptake.
