Job Title: Gynaecology / Colposcopy Surgeon

Job Purpose
- The Gynaecologist/ Colposcopy Surgeon will be responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of a wide range of gynaecological conditions, with a particular focus on cervical pathologies and abnormalities detected through colposcopy.
- This includes routine gynaecological examinations, cancer screening, colposcopic evaluations, and surgical interventions to manage abnormal cervical cytology and pre-cancerous conditions.
- The role involves performing diagnostic procedures such as biopsies, loop electrosurgical excision procedures (LEEP), and laser treatments, as well as more advanced surgeries, including hysterectomies and other complex gynaecological surgeries.
- The role holder will provide leadership in clinical service delivery, mentor junior staff, contribute to research initiatives, and participate in quality improvement processes within the department.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Clinical Practice:
- Independently manage a wide range of gynaecological cases, including elective and emergency care.
- Perform diagnostic colposcopies, biopsies, loop electrosurgical excision procedures (LEEP), and laser treatments.
- Conduct advanced gynaecological surgeries, including hysterectomies and other complex procedures.
- Interpret colposcopy findings and histopathological results to ensure early detection and intervention of cervical cancer and other gynaecological malignancies.
- Provide comprehensive patient care from initial assessment through post-treatment follow-up and recovery.
- Ensure accurate documentation of clinical assessments and operative outcomes.
- Engage in clinical audits, governance activities, and surgical protocol development.
- Serve as a core member of the Gynaecology Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), collaborating with oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, and nursing staff.
- Support the implementation of local and national clinical and quality targets.
Patient-Centred Care:
- Provide compassionate and culturally competent care to diverse patient populations.
- Deliver thorough, transparent communication with patients and their families regarding diagnosis, treatment options, and expected outcomes.
- Offer education and counselling on reproductive health, cervical cancer prevention, sexual health, and fertility options.
- Ensure compliance with ethical and regulatory standards in patient care.
Training, Leadership & Development:
- Mentor and train junior doctors, residents, and clinical support staff in colposcopy and related gynaecological procedures.
- Contribute to internal training programs and surgical skills workshops.
- Promote a learning culture that encourages clinical excellence, innovation, and accountability.
- Act as a clinical expert, contributing to the development of departmental policies, protocols, and standards of care.
Collaboration & Innovation:
- Work closely with other consultants, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, nursing teams, and allied health professionals to optimize multidisciplinary care.
- Contribute to ongoing research projects in the field of gynaecology and colposcopy.
- Stay abreast of the latest advancements in surgical techniques, technologies, and clinical best practices.
- Develop and implement strategies to enhance gynaecological services, particularly colposcopy and cervical screening programs.
Qualifications
- MBBS, MD, or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
- Fellowship in Gynaecology or related surgical specialty (e.g., FMCOG, FWACS or international equivalent).
- Advanced training and certification in Colposcopy.
- Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) or National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (FMCOG) or equivalent.
- Valid license to practice in Nigeria or eligibility for registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
- Minimum of 10 years’ post-fellowship experience in gynecology and colposcopy in a hospital or clinical setting.
- Proven expertise in diagnostic colposcopies, LEEP, laser treatments, and complex gynaecological surgeries.
- Demonstrated expertise in interpreting colposcopy findings and managing complex cervical and gynaecological conditions.
- Leadership experience in a surgical/gynaecology unit.
- Experience in clinical governance and surgical audit.
- Experience in leading multidisciplinary teams and contributing to quality improvement initiatives.
