Job Purpose

  • The Hepatobiliary Surgeon will be responsible for providing expert, high-quality, and patient-centered surgical care for adults with complex benign and malignant conditions of the liver, biliary tree, and pancreas.
  • The role holder will lead the surgical management of patients within our Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) Service, serving as a key specialist responsible for advanced surgical interventions, perioperative care, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
  • The role also involves teaching, mentoring junior medical staff, and driving clinical excellence and innovation in HPB surgery.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities

Clinical Care and Surgical Management:

  • Provide comprehensive surgical care for patients requiring complex procedures including, but not limited to, liver resections, pancreatic resections (e.g., Whipple procedure), bile duct repairs, and laparoscopic HPB surgeries.
  • Perform and interpret specialized diagnostic and interventional procedures relevant to HPB surgery, including intraoperative ultrasound, cholangiography, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) when applicable.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized perioperative and long-term treatment plans for patients, ensuring the highest standards of evidence-based practice and oncological principles.
  • Provide expert consultation to colleagues in medical oncology, gastroenterology, radiology, and intensive care on the surgical aspects of patient care.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration:

  • Work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team including hepatologists, medical and radiation oncologists, radiologists, interventional radiologists, pathologists, and specialist nurses to provide integrated patient care from diagnosis through to treatment and follow-up.
  • Actively participate in multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings, specifically the HPB Tumor Board, to discuss and determine the optimal treatment strategy for complex patient cases, ensuring comprehensive and coordinated care.

Quality Assurance and Clinical Governance:

  • Adhere to and promote all hospital policies, clinical guidelines, and surgical safety protocols, with a focus on enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols for HPB patients.
  • Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement initiatives, and risk management activities to enhance patient safety, surgical outcomes, and service delivery, including meticulous audit of morbidity and mortality.
  • Ensure full compliance with all national and international regulatory and accreditation standards relevant to the hospital's jurisdiction.

Education, Training, and Research:

  • Provide teaching, training, supervision, and mentorship to surgical residents, medical officers, interns, and other healthcare professionals within the HPB team.
  • Contribute to the department's educational program through grand rounds, seminars, and morbidity and mortality (M&M) meetings.
  • Engage in and promote clinical research activities, including participation in clinical trials, to advance the field of HPB surgery and improve patient outcomes. A record of publications in peer-reviewed journals is highly desirable.

Administrative Duties:

  • Participate in the development and implementation of service strategies and new clinical programmes within the HPB and Surgical Services directorate.
  • Ensure accurate, legible, and timely completion of all clinical records and documentation.

Qualifications

  • Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
  • Fellowship or equivalent postgraduate qualification in General Surgery with a sub-specialty fellowship in Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) Surgery from a recognized international board.
  • Possession of a valid medical license and board certification in the country of practice.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience post-qualification in HPB Surgery, with a proven track record of independent practice and managing a high volume of complex cases.
  • Proven experience in managing a broad range of complex benign and malignant HPB surgical cases with excellent outcomes, including major liver and pancreatic resections.
  • Experience in clinical research and a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals is highly desirable.
