Job Title: Infection Control Nurse
Location: Port Harcourt, Rivers
Role Overview
The Infection Control Nurse will be responsible for preventing and controlling the spread of infectious diseases in our healthcare facility.
This includes developing and implementing infection control policies and procedures, conducting surveillance activities, and educating staff and patients on infection control practices.
Key Responsibilities
Infection Prevention & Clinical Oversight:
- Supervise and ensure compliance with established infection prevention protocols including isolation precautions, hand hygiene practices, aseptic techniques, IV set changes, central line dressing care, and terminal cleaning procedures.
- Conduct regular infection control rounds in clinical areas to ensure patients with infectious conditions receive appropriate treatment and isolation precautions.
Surveillance & Infection Monitoring:
- Conduct continuous surveillance of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) across all departments.
- Collect, tabulate, and maintain daily data on infection incidents and associated clinical details.
Quality Control & Compliance:
- Ensure hospital infection control practices comply with established policies, regulatory standards, and accreditation requirements.
- Participate in infection control audits, monitoring, and compliance assessments.
Safety Management:
- Identify infection hazards involving patients, staff, equipment, or the hospital environment.
- Ensure proper handling, sterilization, and disinfection of equipment and clinical materials.
Communication & Coordination:
- Coordinate infection prevention activities between hospital departments, laboratories, and public health authorities.
- Liaise with microbiologists, sterile supply managers, and clinical staff regarding infection control concerns.
Problem-Identification & Escalation:
- Identify potential infection outbreaks or unusual infection patterns promptly.
- Escalate infection control concerns to hospital leadership and relevant health authorities when required.
Requirements
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in infection control and prevention in a healthcare setting. (Recent experience preferred).
- Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid practicing license.
- Certification in Infection Control (CIC) or willing to obtain within the first year of employment
- Strong knowledge of infection control regulations and Standards.
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills in a multidisciplinary surgical environment.
- Ability to prioritize care, act decisively in emergencies, and maintain meticulous documentation.
- Flexibility regarding shift patterns and clinical areas.
- Experience mentoring or teaching junior staff is an advantage.
