Job Title: Laboratory Scientist

Position Summary
The Laboratory Scientist is responsible for conducting accurate and timely laboratory investigations to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases within a multi-specialty hospital.
The role involves handling various types of patient samples, performing complex testing procedures, maintaining laboratory quality standards, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient care.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, verify, label, and prepare patient samples for analysis.
- Perform laboratory tests across key diagnostic areas, including hematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, immunology, parasitology, and histopathology.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments in optimal working condition.
- Monitor and document quality control measures to ensure the reliability and accuracy of test results.
- Interpret, validate, and release test results promptly to requesting physicians.
- Assist doctors in selecting appropriate laboratory tests for diagnosis and monitoring of patient conditions.
- Maintain organized and secure laboratory records, ensuring confidentiality of patient information.
- Ensure compliance with standard operating procedures, biosafety regulations, and infection prevention protocols.
- Participate in internal and external quality assurance programs.
- Train, mentor, and supervise laboratory technicians, interns, and new staff members.
- Manage laboratory inventory, including ordering, receiving, and storing reagents and consumables.
- Participate in research and development of new diagnostic techniques and protocols.
- Respond promptly to emergency testing requests (stat tests) for critical care cases.
- Prepare and present periodic laboratory activity reports to management.
- Collaborate with hospital departments to support multidisciplinary patient care plans.
- Stay updated with new laboratory methods, equipment, and medical trends relevant to hospital operations.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent from a recognized institution.
- Current practicing license from the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).
- Minimum of 2–3 years post-qualification experience in a clinical or hospital laboratory.
- Solid knowledge of diagnostic testing procedures and quality assurance processes.
- Strong attention to detail with excellent problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in laboratory information systems and Microsoft Office tools.
Work Conditions:
- Work is primarily carried out in a hospital laboratory with potential exposure to infectious agents and hazardous chemicals.
- May require rotational shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
Salary
N240,000 - N300,000 / Month.
