About the Role
- We are looking for an experienced and strategic Medical Director to provide overall professional, clinical, operational and executive leadership for the Hospital.
- The Medical Director will be responsible for driving clinical excellence, patient safety, operational efficiency, financial sustainability, revenue growth and quality patient experience. The role will also provide oversight of hospital governance, regulatory compliance, workforce performance, business development and strategic growth.
- The Medical Director will work closely with the Clinical Director, Hospital Administrator and other functional heads, providing clear direction while empowering them to effectively carry out their responsibilities within defined areas of authority and accountability.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Hospital Management:
- Provide overall strategic and executive leadership for the Hospital.
- Translate the Hospital's strategic objectives into measurable clinical, operational, financial, people and business development priorities.
- Develop and implement annual operating plans and performance objectives.
- Ensure effective integration of clinical, administrative and support functions.
- Monitor overall Hospital performance and initiate corrective actions where required.
- Promote a culture of professionalism, accountability, collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement.
- Ensure Hospital activities and resources remain aligned with strategic objectives.
Clinical Governance & Medical Leadership:
- Provide overall professional and clinical leadership for the Hospital.
- Ensure the delivery of safe, ethical, effective and patient-centred healthcare services.
- Establish and maintain effective clinical governance, quality assurance and patient-safety systems.
- Monitor clinical outcomes, morbidity and mortality trends, patient safety indicators and clinical quality metrics.
- Ensure compliance with applicable healthcare regulations, professional standards, accreditation requirements and ethical obligations.
- Oversee medical audits, clinical reviews, morbidity and mortality meetings and quality-improvement programmes.
- Ensure appropriate credentialing, privileging and continuous professional development of medical practitioners.
- Promote evidence-based clinical practice and continuous improvement in standards of care.
- Provide leadership during major clinical incidents, emergencies and critical patient-safety situations.
Clinical Services Oversight:
- Provide strategic direction and oversight to the Clinical Director and Heads of Clinical Departments.
- Review clinical departmental performance against agreed KPIs.
- Ensure appropriate staffing, competency and resource allocation across clinical services.
- Promote multidisciplinary collaboration among doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory personnel and other healthcare professionals.
- Address significant clinical performance and professional conduct issues in line with established policies.
- Ensure effective coordination and continuity of patient care across clinical departments.
Administrative & Operational Oversight:
- Provide executive oversight of the Hospital's administrative and operational activities.
- Establish clear reporting lines, decision rights, accountability and escalation mechanisms between clinical and administrative functions.
- Monitor patient flow, facilities, procurement, logistics, support services, infrastructure and general hospital operations.
- Ensure administrative systems effectively support clinical service delivery.
- Review operational performance reports and ensure timely corrective actions.
- Monitor operational efficiency, resource utilization and service delivery standards.
- Ensure administrative and clinical teams operate as an integrated system.
Business Development & Revenue Growth:
- Develop and execute strategies to grow the Hospital's patient base, clinical services and revenue streams.
- Identify and pursue new clinical, corporate, institutional and strategic partnership opportunities.
- Develop new healthcare services and programmes based on market needs and emerging healthcare trends.
- Build and maintain strategic relationships with HMOs, corporate organizations, government institutions, referral networks, medical professionals and other healthcare partners.
- Strengthen physician engagement, referral networks and strategic patient acquisition channels.
- Identify opportunities for expansion into new specialties, services, locations or healthcare markets.
- Monitor healthcare market trends, competitor activities and patient needs to identify growth opportunities.
- Develop business cases, revenue projections and investment proposals for new services and strategic initiatives.
- Drive initiatives that improve patient acquisition, retention, referral volumes and utilization of Hospital services.
- Monitor business development KPIs including patient volumes, revenue growth, new partnerships, referrals and contribution from new services.
- Ensure commercial growth initiatives remain consistent with clinical standards, ethical requirements and the Hospital's capacity.
Financial Management & Sustainability:
- Provide executive oversight of the Hospital's financial performance in collaboration with Finance and Administration.
- Monitor revenue generation, expenditure, budgets, cost control and financial sustainability.
- Ensure clinical and administrative decisions align with approved budgets and business objectives.
- Review significant expenditure and resource-utilization decisions.
- Identify opportunities for cost optimization without compromising patient safety or quality of care.
- Monitor and address revenue leakage, wastage, procurement inefficiencies and avoidable financial losses.
- Ensure appropriate financial and operational controls are maintained.
- Review financial and operational performance regularly and initiate corrective measures.
People Management & Organizational Effectiveness:
- Provide leadership in building a high-performing, professional and values-driven workforce.
- Work with HR to support workforce planning, recruitment, retention, succession planning and talent development.
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels and competencies across clinical and administrative functions.
- Promote employee engagement, teamwork, accountability and professional conduct.
- Address persistent performance and behavioural issues in accordance with HR policies.
- Support leadership development for Clinical, Administrative and Functional Heads.

- Ensure policies, procedures and controls are developed, implemented and periodically reviewed.

Integration & Change Management:
- Ensure effective integration of newly appointed executives, clinical leaders, administrative heads and other key role holders.
- Establish structured 30-60-90-day integration plans for critical appointments.
- Clarify roles, responsibilities, decision rights and interfaces between new and existing leadership positions.
- Provide appropriate support and resources to enable successful transition into new roles.
- Manage organizational change while minimizing disruption to clinical and business operations.

Board & Executive Reporting:
- Provide regular reports to the Board/Chairman/GCEO on overall Hospital performance.
- Present clinical, operational, financial, business development, workforce, patient experience and risk indicators.
- Escalate significant clinical, financial, regulatory, people and reputational risks.
- Provide recommendations on strategic and operational matters requiring Board/Executive decisions.
- Implement approved strategic and operational decisions effectively.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Clinical & Patient Safety: Clinical quality, patient safety, mortality/morbidity trends, clinical audit compliance and regulatory/accreditation compliance.
- Business & Financial Performance: Revenue growth, patient volume growth, new service revenue, HMO/corporate partnerships, referral growth, budget adherence, cost optimization and reduction of revenue leakage.
- Operational Performance: Patient waiting time, bed/capacity utilization, service availability, operational efficiency and timely resolution of operational issues.
- People & Culture: Employee engagement, staff productivity, leadership effectiveness, retention, succession readiness, grievance trends and psychological safety.
- Patient Experience: Patient satisfaction, complaint resolution, patient retention, referral/recommendation rates and service recovery.
- Governance: Compliance with delegated authority, timely risk escalation, policy compliance, cross-functional collaboration, leadership standards and closure of audit/corrective-action items.
Requirements
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Current registration with the relevant Medical and Dental regulatory authority.
- Postgraduate medical qualification/specialization is strongly preferred.
- Additional qualification in Healthcare Management, Hospital Administration, MBA, Public Health or a related discipline is advantageous.
- Minimum 10–15 years' post-qualification experience, with significant experience in healthcare leadership.
- Demonstrable experience managing multidisciplinary clinical and administrative teams.
- Experience in hospital operations, clinical governance, quality management and healthcare regulations.
- Strong understanding of healthcare financial management and business development.
- Proven experience in strategic planning, revenue growth and stakeholder management.
- Previous experience in a senior medical/hospital leadership position is required.
