The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) has said it will sanitise medical laboratory services in the country by purging it of all forms of malpractices and employing aggressive campaigns against quackery.

The newly elected National President of the association, Dr Casmir Ifeanyi, who stated this Sunday in Abuja during the handover ceremony to the new executives of the association, said the association was worried that Nigerians suffered immense negative health consequences from medical laboratory services provided by quacks and charlatans wrongly employed, particularly by public health institutions.

He said the association was particularly alarmed by the move to formally enthrone quackery in the Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across Nigeria.

Dr Efeanyi said the association recently uncovered a ploy to craft a scheme of service for Community Health Officers (CHOs) by assigning them with the prescribed duties of medical laboratory scientists, noting that doing so was a recipe for disaster and could lead to maiming and killing of Nigerians.

He said, “We, therefore, call on the Head of Service of the Federation, Dr Folashade Yemi-Esan, and the National Council on Establishment not to approve the current version of the draft scheme of service for CHOs as it is froth with infractions and beyond the scope of practice for CHOs.”

He noted that the major thrust of the new regime was the protection of patients and Nigerians in general.
