Job Description
- We are seeking a highly competent, detail-oriented, and motivated Medical Laboratory Scientist with specialization in Microbiology to join its diagnostic services team.
- The successful candidate will be responsible for performing microbiological investigations, identifying infectious agents, ensuring accurate laboratory diagnosis, and supporting clinicians in patient management through timely and reliable laboratory results.
- The ideal candidate must possess strong technical expertise in microbiology, excellent analytical skills, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of laboratory practice and patient care.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform microbiological analyses including bacteriology, virology, mycology, and parasitology investigations.
- Collect, receive, process, culture, and analyze clinical specimens in accordance with standard laboratory procedures.
- Conduct microscopy, culture, sensitivity testing, and organism identification procedures.
- Perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing and provide accurate interpretation of results.
- Ensure strict compliance with aseptic techniques and biosafety standards.
- Maintain quality control and quality assurance procedures within the laboratory.
- Prepare, label, and maintain culture media, reagents, and laboratory consumables.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot microbiology laboratory equipment.
- Document and report laboratory findings accurately and promptly.
- Collaborate with clinicians and other healthcare professionals in patient diagnosis and management.
- Monitor infection trends and support infection prevention and control initiatives within the hospital.
- Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of infectious materials and laboratory waste.
- Participate in laboratory audits, accreditation activities, and continuous quality improvement programs.
Education and Professional Requirements
- Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) with specialization or strong background in Microbiology.
- Registration with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).
- Possession of a valid practicing license.
Experience:
- 2–4years post-qualification experience in a microbiology laboratory is preferred.
- Experience in a hospital or diagnostic laboratory setting is an added advantage.
Required Skills and Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of bacteriology, virology, mycology, and parasitology.
- Proficiency in aseptic techniques and biosafety practices.
- Ability to interpret microbiological results accurately and effectively.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Good documentation and report-writing skills.
