Job Title: Medical Officer (GP)
Location: Abuja

Reports to: Medical Director, Other Consultants
Direct Reports: General Practitioners, Head Nurse, and all other Nurses
Job Objective
To administer treatment, therapy, medication, vaccination, and other specialized medical care to treat or prevent illness, disease, or injury.
Tasks & Responsibilities
General:
- To provide urgent medical attention and urgent treatment to staff or visitors in case of accident or sudden illness in liaison with the senior nurse on duty.
- Inpatient Assessment, ward rounds and review (diagnosis, management plan medications)
- Liaising with consultants in regards Inpatient care
- Outpatient review and initial assessment
- Relating with patients relatives /caregivers on present state of health and further management.
- Providing documentation as regards Health reports and discharge summaries of clients
- Attending to emergencies as regards clients (inpatient) health care.
- Diagnose, treat, and help prevent diseases and injuries that commonly occur in the general population.
- Order, perform and interpret tests, and analyse records, reports and examination information to diagnose patients' condition.
- Monitor the patients' conditions and progress and re-evaluate treatments as necessary.
- Provides prenatal care to pregnant women, and provides postnatal care to mother and infant.
- Performs minor surgery and assist in major surgeries. May make house and emergency calls to attend to patients unable to visit the hospital.
- To certify deaths, complete death certificates.as required
- To comply with all hospital policies and procedures in particular those relating to Health and Safety at Work.
- To be familiar with the hospital’s corporate care pathway and follow accordingly.
- Development of systems, processes and procedures for medical manpower management in consultation with senior management
Consultants:
- To seek consent for any procedures that they intend to undertake.
- To communicate any medical problems or concerns to Consultants.
- To act as reasonably required, on behalf of the Consultant in their absence when requested.
- To undertake within their level of experience and competence certain medical procedures required by the consultants.
- Participates in Surgeries, Labour cases, Out patient consultation, Inpatient and NICU follow-up, and consistently use the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) at all levels of patients' care including data entry after attending to emergencies, while keeping records for performance review.
- Adheres to laid down departmental protocols and work processes for the management of patients and cases.
- Teachable with the clear ability to accept corrections and make expected changes where necessary.
- Adopts professional approaches at all times in ensuring patients', their relatives as well as other staff compliance with the hospital's safety guidance as necessary.
- Utilizes excellent communication skills with patients, their relatives and other members of staff while demonstrating respect, compassion and integrity.
- Responds promptly when called up to attend to a patient
- Works independently and with minimal supervision while still maintaining a good team spirit.
- Contributes meaningfully to the overall work processes, and day to day management of patients of Deda Hospital.
Nursing Staff & Patients:
- To liaise with nursing staff regularly (at least every 3-4 hours) to check on patient progress, or more frequently if their condition necessitates. To see patients at the request of nurses in charge and carry out examinations of patients.
- To take blood samples from patients as may be required from time to time and to undertake arterial blood sampling as necessary.
- To respond to calls from the ward relating to patient care.
- To discuss medication on discharge with patients and write a discharge summary if requested.
- To administer intravenous medications / therapy if required
- And any other adhoc duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- MBBS
- Registration with relevant bodies.
- Required Experience: None.
Required Skills & Competencies:
- Attention to details: Find enlarged lymph nodes or splenomegaly on examination
- Effective communication: Explain a disease or procedure to patients in plain, understandable terms.
- Problem solving Skill: Recognize when a patient needs to be transferred to the ICU.
- Ability to work in a team: Know when to call in a consultant and when to do the work themselves.
- Ability to handle pressure
- Computer Literacy
- Display patience.
