RE: 6 CREDIT UNITS (6CU) FOR RENEWAL OF PROFESSIONAL LICENCE BY NURSES AND MIDWIVES

You will recall that the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria in its circular number N&MCN/SG/RO/24/VOL.4/164 dated 13th May, 2020, lowered the acceptable number of credit units for renewal of licence from 6 to 3 credit units.

This was a time-limit concession for the period of covid-19 pandemic lockdown during which States MCPDP Implementation Committees were restricted from mounting MCPDP Programmes for nurses and midwives.

The Council gave the concession as a temporary relief measure for nurses who could not attend MCPDP due to the Federal Government Directives on social gathering and social distancing which made mounting of MCPDP impossible.

In line with the Federal Government directive relaxing the lockdown and partial lifting of restriction on social gathering to not more than 50 persons in an enclosed environment, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria had since directed the resumption of MCPDP activities in the States vide Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria circular number NMCN/EDU/CIR/44/VOL.1/89 dated 8th September 2020, and so far many states have resumed mounting of MCPDP.

In the light of the foregoing, please be informed that the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria hereby reverts to 60 contact hours amounting to 6 credit units for renewal of practicing licence. Please be reminded that our of the 6 credit units required, at least 3 credit units must come from the Council’s MCPDP mounted by the States Implementation Committee.

Please note that the above reversal takes effect from 1st January, 2021.

Please bring the content of this circular to the attention of all concerned.

Thank you for your support in promoting and maintaining excellence in Nursing Education and Practice.
