In today’s Nigerian newspapers review programme, Today in the News, Vanguard leads with the World Health Organization (WHO)’s warning that no vaccine or specific treatment is currently available for the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus identified in Nigeria.

Another major report focuses on the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, which has rejected the volume of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) imports reported by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) for 2022 and 2023. The committee raised concerns over significant discrepancies between the authority’s figures and those supplied by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

Vanguard also reports that the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, disclosed that only 108 out of approximately 39,000 underage candidates who sat the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) passed the Federal Government’s rigorous screening for possible admission into tertiary institutions.

Moving to The Guardian, the newspaper leads with a report highlighting weak oversight and inadequate fiscal planning as major factors behind the abandonment of more than 6,000 projects across Nigeria. The combined value of the projects is estimated to run into trillions of naira.

The Punch reports that the diplomat diagnosed with the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, has reportedly deteriorated into multi-organ failure. Meanwhile, the Federal Government and state governments are intensifying surveillance, contact tracing and emergency preparedness efforts to prevent further spread of the disease.

Finally, The Nation reports that Vice President Kashim Shettima has challenged state governments to take greater responsibility for addressing their electricity challenges instead of relying solely on the Federal Government for solutions.

Those are the major headlines in today’s Nigerian newspapers review programme, Today in the News.
