Association for Reproductive and Family Health (ARFH) is a leading Non-Governmental and Not-for-Profit Organization established in 1989 by two eminent and reputable Nigerians who are the most prominent advocates of Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) and Family Planning (FP) programming in Nigeria. ARFH, a Nigerian fully indigenous, Non- Governmental, and Not-for-Profit organization had implemented projects across the 36+1 states of Nigeria on cross cutting programs including Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health plus Nutrition Investment Case (RMNCAH+N), Family Planning (FP), Global fund grants on HIV, TB and Malaria as Prime & Sub recipient, USAID grants on Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) among others.
ARFH since inception consistently contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of rural poor, vulnerable and disadvantaged populations. ARFH has been at the fore-front of Health & community system strengthening, Human resource for health development in Nigeria, supporting the Government of Nigeria to advocate and domesticate health policies into implementation e.g. its task-shifting and task sharing policy through capacity building for all cadres of health care providers including Physicians, Nurse midwives, and CHEWs.
ARFH has its headquarter in Ibadan and operational offices in Abuja, Lagos, and collaborate with State Ministry of Health across the 36 states plus FCT. Our mission is to initiate, promote and implement in partnership with other organizations, developmental, HIV & AIDS, TB, SRH, and family planning program and interventions for young people and adults through capacity building, technical assistance, operations research, and evaluation to improve the quality of life in Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa.

Job Title: Nurse / Midwife

Job Summary
- The midwife nurse is responsible for providing skilled, compassionate, and comprehensive care to women during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the postnatal period.
- The role includes promoting maternal and neonatal health, offering education and counseling, and ensuring safe delivery practices in line with clinical standards and protocols.
Key Responsibilities
Antenatal Care:
- Conduct antenatal assessments and monitor maternal and fetal health.
- Educate expectant mothers on nutrition, hygiene, and birth preparedness.
- Identify and manage minor complications or refer complex cases appropriately.
Labor and Delivery:
- Provide skilled assistance during labor and childbirth.
- Monitor the progress of labor and assess maternal and fetal well-being.
- Administer prescribed medications and pain relief as directed.
- Ensure safe delivery procedures and immediate newborn care.
Postnatal Care:
- Monitor mothers and newborns after delivery to detect and manage complications.
- Support breastfeeding and provide guidance on infant care.
- Offer family planning advice and postpartum counseling.
- Clinical Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records.
- Prepare and submit delivery and maternal health reports.
- Adhere to all clinical safety standards and ethical practices.
Health Education & Counseling:
- Educate patients and families on reproductive health, child spacing, and preventive care.
- Participate in community outreach programs to promote maternal and child health.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated care.
- Participate in team meetings, case reviews, and continuous professional development sessions.
Specific Responsibilities
Antenatal Care:
- Conduct regular antenatal clinics, including assessment of maternal and fetal health.
- Educate expectant mothers on nutrition, hygiene, and birth preparedness.
- Monitor blood pressure, weight, and fetal development, and record findings accurately.
- Identify high-risk pregnancies and refer promptly to appropriate medical officers.
Labor and Delivery:
- Provide skilled assistance during labor, ensuring safe delivery of mother and baby.
- Monitor labor progress, fetal heart rate, and maternal condition.
- Maintain a sterile environment and follow all infection prevention protocols.
- Offer emotional and physical support to mothers during childbirth.
Postnatal Care:
- Conduct postnatal checks for both mother and newborn.
- Support mothers in breastfeeding, baby care, and postpartum hygiene.
- Identify and manage postnatal complications or refer when necessary.
Family Planning and Reproductive Health
- Provide counseling and services on family planning methods.
- Educate clients on sexual and reproductive health issues.
- Maintain confidentiality and ensure patient comfort and trust.
Record Keeping and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including antenatal, delivery, and postnatal registers.
- Prepare periodic reports on maternal and child health activities for management.
- Ensure proper documentation of all clinical procedures and outcomes.
Health Education and Community Outreach:
- Participate in community health education and awareness campaigns.
- Provide health talks on maternal and child health, immunization, and hygiene.
Clinical Support and Teamwork:
- Collaborate with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure holistic patient care.
- Assist in minor procedures and emergency response when needed.
- Ensure availability and proper use of midwifery equipment and supplies.
Administrative and Professional Duties:
- Ensure adherence to clinic policies, ethics, and safety protocols.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and continuous professional development programs.
- Uphold patient rights, dignity, and confidentiality at all times.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Registered Nurse Midwife (RNM) or equivalent qualification.
- Current practicing license from the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
- Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience in a maternity or clinical setting.
- Strong knowledge of maternal and neonatal care practices.
- Excellent communication, empathy, and patient care skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and respond effectively to emergencies.
Required Experience:
- Minimum of 2–5 years of hands-on experience as a Registered Midwife Nurse in a reputable hospital, maternity center, or clinic.
- Proven experience in antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care, including assisting in normal deliveries and managing obstetric emergencies.
- Sound knowledge of maternal and child health, family planning, and reproductive health services.
- Experience in patient counseling, health education, and breastfeeding support.
- Proficiency in monitoring vital signs, maintaining accurate medical records, and administering medications as prescribed.
- Familiarity with infection prevention and control practices in clinical settings.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure, especially during emergency situations or labor.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with patients, families, and medical teams.
- Prior experience in a community health program or rural healthcare service is an added advantage.
