RE: LAGOS NURSE PERFORMS SURGERY ON EDO WOMAN

The attention of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, Lagos State Council has been drawn to news circulating about a Nurse who was alleged to have carried out surgery on a woman who eventually died.

We want to first commiserate with the family, friends and associates of the Patient who died. Our thoughts and prayers are with them in this time of grief.

As an Association, we are monitoring the investigation of the appropriate authorities keenly and gathering information on the case. We want to state unequivocally that we neither condone nor tolerate professionals stepping outside their competencies and scope of practice.

The Scope of practice of Nurses as of today in Nigeria does not include carrying out such medical procedure as was alleged to have been carried out on the Patient and regulations do not permit such procedure to be carried out in a Convalescent home as the facility was described to be. In countries where Nurses are permitted to carry out such procedure, appropriate training and legislative frameworks are usually in place.

Therefore, if the allegation is confirmed to be true by the investigating authorities, the association would stand to condemn the act and advocate for the application of the appropriate punishment as prescribed in Law. We would equally present it to the Tribunal of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria for further disciplinary actions.

The Association would never defend or put its weight behind any member who is found to be operating beyond his or her scope of practice.

Again, we extend our condolences to the family and associates of the patient for whom this loss is most devastating.
