Job Title: Operating Theatre Nurse

Location: Port Harcourt, Rivers

 

Role Overview  

The Operating Theatre Nurse provides care during the pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative phases of care within the Operating Room Suite.

The post holder must have the ability to work effectively both independently and within a multi-disciplinary/ multi-cultural team in the Operating Room to deliver the highest quality of care.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Preparation & Procedural Support:

  • Prepare patients for surgery by conducting pre-operative assessments, obtaining consent, and providing education on procedures.
  • Ensure operating theatres are equipped with sterile instruments, surgical supplies, and monitoring equipment.

Quality Control & Clinical Compliance:

  • Adhere strictly to perioperative nursing standards, sterile technique protocols, and infection control procedures.
  • Ensure all theatre equipment, medications, and surgical supplies are checked, functional, and within expiry dates.

Safety Management:

  • Promote patient safety throughout surgical care and recovery in accordance with hospital infection prevention policies.
  • Identify, report, and mitigate operational or clinical risks in the operating theatre.

Communication & Multidisciplinary Coordination:

  • Communicate effectively with surgical teams, patients, families, and multidisciplinary staff before, during, and after procedures.
  • Provide structured clinical handovers to post-operative or recovery units.

Problem-Identification & Escalation:

  • Make timely clinical decisions during high-pressure surgical situations
  • Identify complications or deterioration early and implement appropriate interventions within scope of practice.
  • Documentation & Reporting:
  • Accurately document patient assessments, procedures, medications, and outcomes.
  • Complete theatre records, incident reports, and post-operative documentation within required timelines.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid practicing license.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in operating theatre, perioperative, or surgical nursing.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required; additional critical care or perioperative certifications advantageous.
  • Knowledge of perioperative nursing, sterile techniques, surgical patient monitoring, and recovery care.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills in a multidisciplinary surgical environment.
  • Ability to prioritize care, act decisively in emergencies, and maintain meticulous documentation.
  • Flexibility regarding shift patterns and clinical areas.
  • Experience mentoring or teaching junior staff is an advantage.
