Job Title: Registered Midwife
Location: Tarauni, Kano

Job Summary
- The Registered Midwife is responsible for providing safe, evidence-based, compassionate, and high-quality care to women during pregnancy, labour, childbirth, and the postnatal period.
- The Midwife also provides essential newborn care, health education, family planning counselling, and supports the multidisciplinary healthcare team in promoting maternal and child health.
Key Responsibilities
Antenatal Care:
- Conduct comprehensive antenatal assessments.
- Monitor maternal and fetal wellbeing.
- Identify high-risk pregnancies and promptly refer to the appropriate clinician.
- Provide antenatal health education on nutrition, birth preparedness, breastfeeding, danger signs, and newborn care.
- Administer prescribed medications and immunizations.
Labour and Delivery:
- Admit and assess women in labour.
- Monitor labour using the partograph.
- Conduct normal vaginal deliveries within the scope of practice.
- Recognize complications early and promptly notify the obstetrician.
- Assist in instrumental and Caesarean deliveries when required.
- Perform neonatal resuscitation where necessary.
- Ensure infection prevention and control measures are strictly followed.
Postnatal Care:
- Monitor mothers during the immediate postpartum period.
- Assess uterine involution, bleeding, pain, and recovery.
- Promote and support exclusive breastfeeding.
- Educate mothers on newborn care, hygiene, nutrition, family planning, and postnatal danger signs.
- Identify postpartum complications and initiate appropriate referrals.
Newborn Care:
- Perform immediate newborn assessment.
- Monitor newborn growth and wellbeing.
- Administer routine newborn medications and immunizations according to hospital protocols.
- Maintain accurate newborn documentation.
- Educate mothers on infant feeding, immunization schedules, and newborn danger signs.
Emergency Care:
- Respond promptly to obstetric emergencies.
- Participate in neonatal resuscitation.
- Assist in the management of postpartum haemorrhage, eclampsia, obstructed labour, and other obstetric emergencies.
- Maintain readiness of emergency equipment and medications.
Patient Education:
- Provide counselling on:
- Pregnancy care
- Family planning
- Breastfeeding
- Nutrition
- Personal hygiene
- Prevention of sexually transmitted infections
- Child immunization
- Encourage attendance at antenatal and postnatal clinics.
Documentation:
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential patient records.
- Complete labour, delivery, postnatal, and newborn documentation.
- Report incidents and adverse events according to hospital policy.
Infection Prevention and Quality Assurance:
- Adhere to infection prevention and control guidelines.
- Ensure proper sterilization of equipment.
- Participate in quality improvement activities and maternal death reviews.
- Comply with hospital safety standards and regulatory requirements.
Teamwork:
- Collaborate effectively with obstetricians, paediatricians, anaesthetists, nurses, laboratory personnel, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Participate in ward rounds, clinical meetings, and multidisciplinary case reviews.
- Mentor junior staff and student midwives where assigned.
Professional Development:
- Maintain current registration and licence.
- Participate in continuing professional development (CPD).
- Keep up to date with evidence-based midwifery practices.
- Comply with the Code of Professional Conduct for Nurses and Midwives.
Qualifications
- Registered Midwife (RM).
- Current practising licence issued by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
- Additional certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation is an advantage.
Experience:
- Minimum of 1- 2 years of post-qualification clinical experience is preferred.
- Experience in a secondary or tertiary healthcare facility is an added advantage.
