Job Title: Research Expert, Nutrition Sensitivity Analysis

Location: Abuja

Employment Type: Contract

Background and Rationale

  • The World Bank’s Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN) project, with US$232 million financing from the International Development Association (IDA) and Global Financing Facility (GFF), aims to increase utilization of quality, cost-effective nutrition services for pregnant and lactating women, adolescent girls and children under five years of age in select states.
  • As the first 5-year slice of a longer-term engagement of the World Bank in Nigeria for improving nutrition outcomes, ANRiN project is a testing ground for innovations and new ways of service delivery, in 12 high malnutrition burden states that represent all six geographical zones of Nigeria. It proposes to achieve its development objective through two components, namely:
  • Basic package of nutrition services (US$ 185.75 million); and
  • Stewardship and project management (US$ 46.25 million).
  • Under the overall responsibility and direct supervision of Senior Technical Advisor, Evaluations and Strategic Research (Global Technical Services), the Consultant will implement nutrition landscape and gap analyses, and an ethnographic study; develop program impact pathways for the selected projects; and organize a formative workshop.
  • The Consultant will also implement any other study that may be required during the consultancy period.

Major responsibilities

  • The Consultant will use the proposal developed by Nutrition International as a guide to accomplishing all tasks mentioned above.
  • A version of the proposal for the same will be provided to the Consultant upon signature of the contract.
  • The following will be the major responsibilities related to the consultancy.

Administrative/Financial:

  • Meet with the project team at an agreed upon interval to review and/or re-set projected activities and deliverables.
  • Prepare tentative budget for the field implementation in consultation with the supervisor.

Technical:

  • Periodically update supervisor through the weekly meetings and notify immediately any urgent matters related to the project implementation and improvement.
  • Suggest matters related to critical decision making about the implementation of the research.
  • Organize and provide training to the interviewers if needed.
  • Prepare study tools and consent forms as required.
  • Prepare and submit application for ethical approval to relevant review board.
  • Analyze data.

Reporting and dissemination:

Prepare final report and outputs/materials for manuscript.

Profile/ Qualifications of Consultant

The Consultant should have the following profile:

Education:

Master’s Degree or Doctorate in Public Health, Nutrition, Applied Social Sciences or relevant field.

Language Skills:

English: high written and oral capability. Proficiency in Nigerian languages considered an asset.

Experience:

  • At least 5 years of professional, relevant, experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in mixed methods research.
  • Relevant experience in assessing health and nutrition outcomes and processes through sound research methods.
  • Relevant experience analyzing quantitative and qualitative data using appropriate analysis software (e.g. Stata, SPSS, NVivo, Atlas Ti).
  • Demonstrated expertise in evaluations through experience and publications.

Timeline:

  • It is anticipated that this consultancy will begin in January 2024 and will be for a duration of one year, ending December 2024.
  • The Consultant will be expected to work 65 days over the course of the one-year period.

Travel Requirements:

There is no travel expected for this Consultancy.

Station / Location:

  • The Consultant is required to have the right to work in Nigeria and be based in Abuja.
  • The Consultant will work from Nutrition International’s office during their working days.
