The Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA) is an independent humanitarian medical NGO that was created in 2009 by professionals of humanitarian medicine. ALIMA’s mission is to provide medical care in emergency situations or medical catastrophes.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Research Laboratory Scientist

Location: Ondo

Job Type: Full Time

Main Activities

  • This description includes the main responsibilities of the position. However, you may be asked to perform tasks other than those listed above and to be flexible in the management of your function without this being considered a modification in the contract.
  • Conduct a set of laboratory tests on patient samples, ensuring accuracy, precision, and adherence to strict study protocols.
  • These tests will include but are not limited to nucleic acid extraction, polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), blood biochemistry and hematology.
  • The candidate should be available to participate in after-hours emergency response situations related to the clinical trial, providing essential support as needed.
  • Adhere to quality control procedures to ensure the reliability and reproducibility of experimental results.
  • Perform the proper maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment, troubleshoot technical issues, following standard operating procedures.
  • Routinely monitor and record the temperature of the laboratory space, fridges and freezers, documenting any alarms triggered by the temperature monitoring system promptly.
  • Adhere to safety protocols to minimize the risk while handling infectious materials and biohazardous substances.
  • Prepare samples for pickups, courier deliveries, and shipments, ensuring proper packaging and compliance with transportation regulations.
  • Collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, researchers, and medical professionals.
  • Undertake additional duties as assigned to meet the specific needs of the clinical trial and research team.
  • Report to work on time and perform all daily functions with professionalism and dedication to contribute to the successful execution of the clinical trial.

Necessary Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Life Science / Biomedical Science / Medical Laboratory Science

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience with data entry, shipping/receiving, and/or sample management.
  • Must be registered with the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) and possess a valid certificate of practice.
  • Demonstrated experience in a research laboratory environment, preferably in virology or infectious disease research with working in Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with a Laboratory Information System (LIS) is highly desirable.    
  • Working competence with PCs including MS Excel and Word with an ability to learn other MS/Windows based applications.
  • Knowledge of methods to handle, process, and store biological specimens using a computerized storage and retrieval system.
  • Knowledge of Universal Precautions, general laboratory and quality control/assurance procedures.
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups.
  • Must be able to communicate well in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to complete work under tight deadlines and have strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and pay attention to details.
  • Ability to work with temperature sensitive materials.
  • A keen eye for detail and the ability to maintain accurate records are essential for this position.
