Job Title: Verbal Autopsy Physician

Job Description
- The 2024 Nigeria Verbal and Social Autopsy (VASA) study is being launched in 2024. This will be the third VASA study conducted in Nigeria, in 2014 and 2019, and the first one supported by The DHS Program.
- The study will be co-implemented under the leadership of the Study Implementation Team (SIT), comprised of representatives from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (FMOH&SW) and the National Population Commission (NPC).
- The SIT has identified a need for targeted technical assistance to support the processing of verbal autopsy results, namely, to oversee a team of physicians to diagnose the causeof death among children (under 5 years) and women (12-49 years), assure quality and accuracy of the diagnoses.
- ICF will engage the services of a short-term VA physician consultant to provide technical support for the 2024 Nigeria VASA.
Responsibilities
- The consultant will be working in close coordination with the SIT members from FMOH&SW and NPC, and will report to ICF team. Following are the key areas of involvement.
- Attend training for 2024 Nigeria VASA, including training for physician VA review.
- Review and provide input into the minimum diagnostic criteria for child and maternal deaths.
- Oversee 6 physicians for the duration of VA reviews.
- Ensure quality assurance of 10% of VA child cases and 10% of VA female cases.
- Review child and female VA cases as needed to ensure timely and quality results.
- Working with the SIT, prepare VA diagnoses for automated ICD-11 coding and selection of underlying COD, ensure manual coding and selection of UCOD for any cases rejected from the automated tool.
- Provide regular updates to the SIT focal points and ICF team.
- Other related activities.
Qualifications And Experience
- Qualified medical physician with public health experience.
- Familiarity with verbal autopsy studies.
- Experience diagnosing cause of death using verbal autopsy data.
- Training in International Cause of Death (ICD) classification.
- Training on the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death.
- Knowledge of Excel.
