Veterinary Council of Nigeria: Curtailment of Corona-Virus (COVID-19) Pandemic in Nigeria

Posted on: Thu 16-04-2020

Dear Professional Colleagues

CURTAILMENT OF CORONA-VIRUS (COVID-19) PANDEMIC IN NIGERIA

Sequel to the measures put in place by the Federal and state Governments of Nigeria in an effort to contain this dreaded pandemic, I have adequately briefed and reiterated the significance of Veterinary and Para-Veterinary professionals as a critical component of Essential Service Providers in line with World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) protocol to the Police authorities. This effort had convincingly made the police hierarchy to expressly direct its commands and formations across the Federation to recognize the discharge of Veterinary and Para-Veterinary services across the country during the lock-down and restriction of movement policy. The directives also include free movement of poultry and poultry products, livestock and livestock products as well as vaccines, medications etc.

Consequently, the council hereby directs all and sundry to ensure that, you are in possession of your valid professional means of identification at all times, dressed professionally and adequately kitted with necessary personal protective equipment as prescribe by the Veterinary professional ethics, cooperate with relevant enforcement agencies and always be of appropriate behavior.

Similarly, you have the responsibility of ensuring and safeguarding your health, the health of your immediate workers as well as your clients via provision of appropriate levels of biosecurity, placement of adequate precautionary measures and use of required protective gears.

While appreciating your collective efforts as professionals in combating this deadly menace, rest assured of the Council’s prompt response and intervention in all matters relating to the progress and advancement of the profession at all times.

Signed:

CP Aishatu Abubakar DVM, PhD, NPOM
