National Chairman of the Association of Pharmacists of Nigeria, ACPN, Dr. Albert Alkali has raised the alarm over the practice of raising quacks charged with selling and dispensing drugs through apprenticeship under patent medicine store operation.
Alkali who made the call in an exclusive interview with the New Telegraph, however urged established schools of health technologies across the federation to include the training of pharmacy technicians in their curricular to enable society to raise pharmacy technicians that will acquire the knowledge on handling and selling drugs. While positing that those who want to provide services in this area must acquire this minimum educational qualification as the minimum standard to ensure that they have the needed education and skills, Alkali said putting anyone intending to sell and dispense drugs under the apprenticeship of patent- medicine stores, was not acceptable.
According to him, the operators of these patentmedicine stores lack the knowledge and skills to put people through such apprenticeship. He noted that the approvalgiven to patient medicine store sell medicine is limited to overthe- counter medications alone.
