An Address Presented By Dr. Famba Famba Daniel, President, Association Of Resident Doctors, Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital Chapter On The Occasion Of The Maiden Edition Of Late Dr. Living Jamala At The Rivers State House Of Assembly Auditorium On 16th January 2018

 

It is my honour and pleasure to welcome you to the maiden edition of Late Dr. Living Jamala Memorial lecture. This lecture has been instituted by the Association of Resident Doctors, Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital chapter to honour Late Dr. Living Jamala, who was a resident doctor in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital. 

 

Late Dr. Living Jamala died on 14th January, 2016 from Lassa fever he contracted from a patient. 

 

Today we are here to remember and honour a gallant resident doctor who had contributed enormously to the struggle of better welfare for resident doctors. 

 

He was an outstanding resident doctor whose kindness, and spirit of selflessness made him a victim of lasso fever. 

 

The demise of Late Dr. Living Jamala revealed several loopholes in our Healthcare delivery, ranging from diagnostic error to ineffective response to disease outbreak. These loopholes stem from lack of training and retraining of Health professionals, non accreditation of some departments in the State's only Tertiary Hospital and non availability of basic Hospital equipment. 

 

However, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel with the recent move by the State Government to revamp the Health Sector. 

 

In his presentation of 2018 budget "Governor Wike stated that his administration is providing the sum of N30 billion in 2018 to enhance all aspects of the healthcare delivery system in the Stat, including the provision of health infrastructure for health institutions, recruitment and training of medical doctors and other healthcare personnel, refurbishing and equipping our primary healthcare centres, providing vaccines for routine immunization against child killer diseases, as well as in carrying out education and sensitization programmes on reproductive, maternal, neonatal and child healthcare" The implementation of the budget will address the challenges mentioned earlier. 

 

We are using this medium to appreciate our amiable Governor MR PROJECT for the monumental development of Rivers State in general and the Health Sector in particular. We call on the governor to ensure implementation of the budget to the letter especially as it concerns the Health Sector. 

We are also calling on the Governor to immortalise Late Dr. Living Jamala by naming part of Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital after him. 

The theme for the lecture was carefully chosen and we are indeed fortunate to have Dr. Ogaji Daprim, a seasoned speaker to deliver the lecture.
