President Muhammadu Buhari has said that provision of quality affordable healthcare service to all Nigerians irrespective their status or location is a key priority to the present administration. President Buhari made this known on Thursday 1st February, 2018 while speaking at the World Medical Association (WMA) Africa Regional Meeting on End Life issues conference organized by Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Abuja.
President Buhari who was represented by the Hon. Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole said the present administration was determined to ensure that everybody had access to basic healthcare services.
“We want mothers to deliver their babies safely, Nigerian children should live beyond the age of five, Nigerians should not suffer financial hardship as a result of seeking healthcare services” President Buhari stressed.
“Presently, over 3128 PHCs have been upgraded with support from government and partners, we have also commenced the upgrading of 8 Tertiary Hospitals selected from 6 geo-political zones to provide services on cancer treatment, cardiology, renal and trauma management. This will save lives, reverse medical tourism and reduce capital flights.” Speaking on healthcare funding which would guarantee universal health coverage, President Buhari said the present administration was committed to the actualization of Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) which was meant to increase financing to the health sector.
On exodus of health professionals, the President said Federal Government was working hard to reverse the trend by improving the welfare of medical professionals.
In his remarks, the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) President Dr. Mike Ogirima commended the foreign delegates who came from various African countries to discuss issues to end life.
“Today we are gathered here to discuss end of life issues, we hope at the end of today we shall collate all views and forward same to World Medical Association” He said.
Also speaking at the event the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki represented by the Chairman Senate Committee on Health, Senator Lanre Tejuosho said that though the African Medical Communities had done much there was need to increase the tempo so as to reduce health challenges in African countries.
He advised that African Health Professionals should endeavor to work in Africa and not migrate to other continent.
