Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, has said that the high rate of maternal and child mortality in Nigeria needs to be addressed.
Buhari made this known in Minna on Tuesday when she declared open a three-day workshop on advocacy for reproductive maternal, new-born, child, adolescent, health and nutrition by wives of Governors from the north central geo-political zone of the country.
She said that unless a strategic action was taken to address these issues they might remain unchanged or grow worse. Buhari, who was represented at the occasion by the former Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Chief Pauline Tallen, also called on government at all levels to tackle malnutrition in children.
She promised to support the state’s activities by carrying out a capacity building workshop for governors’ wives as the chief advocates in their respective states and other technical officers who will work with them to facilitate the process.
Earlier in her address, the wife of the Niger State Governor, Dr. Amina Bello, said that the seminar was to identify the priority areas for governor’s wives advocacy.
Bello said, “As governors’ wives, our vision is for a Nigeria where no woman dies from pregnancy-related causes and our mission is to create awareness and opportunity for women and girls to realise their full potential in an environment that is safe for pregnancy and childbirth.”
