Reports state that another nurse has been assaulted by a doctor at Kola Daisi Foundation Center less than a week after another serious incident was reported as happened at UCH Ibadan. Kola Daisi Foundation Center is not a private facility but is a PHC built, managed and staffed by UCH. And it's also about a 15 minute walk from UCH to KDF.

 

While the report says that the nurse was assaulted by a doctor on the 8th of July 2017, about 3 days ago, our contact who prefers to remain un-named says nothing has been done about it". She reported that the assualt occurred after the Nurse on duty asked the Doctor why he had brought his "private patient" to the hospital to be consulted on without due process. He was said to have taken the questioning as an insult to his person and responded to the said outrage, in tge heat of the moment he had slapped the nurse and had his hands around her neck in what it seemed to be an effort to strangle her before they were seperated by onlookers.

 

The annonimous contact lamented that: "Our hospitals are places where people receive health care, not venues for bad behaviour and violence. Verbal abuse, threats and physical assaults against nurses are not acceptable in any clime or place. Nurses are the backbone of our community and sadly incidents like these are becoming all too common.

 

She also said that it was important that a message be made loud and clear by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria & the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives that violence against Nurses in any shape or form is unacceptable.

 

"We need to send the message to everybody that this is totally unacceptable," she said.

 

Since the start of the year 2017, there have been more than 5 cases of assualt on Nurses by either patients, family members or their co-workers. This is becoming a norm in Nigeria and in most of our facilities, and because it always ends inhouse with only an appology tended to the nurses involved when the evidence to back them up is available or the nurses assualted are forced to appologise themselves to those who beat them up when they have nothing to back them up, it seems this act would definately increase over time. My advice, get a lawyer, drop down the gauntlet and threaten to sue, once this blows up and everyone realises that its going not going to be bussiness as usual for assualts things would change.
