The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital (ATBU-TH) Bauchi said 61 out of 540 women who participated in its free breast and cervical cancer screening last December had cancers.
The co-ordinator of the exercise, Dr Habiba Ismail, disclosed this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Wednesday.
The coordinator said that the screening was sponsored by the wife of the state governor, Hajiya Hadiza Mohammed.
Ismail said that 30 women were diagnosed with various breast cancer legions, five women had tuberculosis of the breast and five women were confirmed with breast cancer. “Those with confirmed breast cancer cases were given N100, 000 each to support further treatment and those with the various legions were supported with N20, 000 each.
“Also 21 women had various cervical legion, 11 were confirmed with cancer of the cervix with stage one and stage two cancers.
“Among the 11 confirmed cases, four patients had already undergone surgeries here in ATBU-TH, eight were referred to Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABU-TH) for chemo radiation.
“Each of the cervical cancer patients was supported with N150, 000 by the governor’s wife,’’ she said.
The coordinator said that 1,100 women were screened during the exercise, adding that 430 results were yet to be released.
Ismail said that plans were underway to conduct a similar exercise for the men to ensure that the disease was prevented, diagnosed and treated.
