The Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria (HRORN) has called for the training of health record practitioners in conventional institutions.
Registrar of the board, Alhaji Mohammed Ibrahim Mami made the call yesterday in Abuja when he led a delegation on a visit to the headquarters of Media Trust, publishers of Daily Trust and other titles.
He said training for the profession, which has been in existence since 1966 and got legal backing in 1989, was being done within teaching hospitals and colleges of health sciences instead of conventional institutions. “We want this programme moved to the conventional institutions so that there can be proper training and manpower development in the area,” he said.
Mami said no university in Nigeria currently runs Bachelors degree programmes in health records, adding that this was a setback especially with the global trend towards utilization of electronic information technology to manage the patients, as well as the career progression of civil servants as the highest qualification available now in Nigeria is Higher National Diploma (HND).
The registrar said the board was in talks with the National Universities Commission (NUC), and the National Open University of Nigeria to commence Bachelors degree programmes in information management with bias on health information.
He added that by so doing, manpower would be built within the next ten years to run the programme up to PhD level.
