The College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Idi-Araba inducted 139 Medical and Dental Surgeons on Friday, July 8, 2016 at the New Great Hall of the College.
The historic event featured an Induction Lecture, which was delivered by the Lagos State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Jide Idris.
In his welcome address, the College Secretary, Oladejo Azeez, Esq., welcome all the guests on behalf of the Provost, Professor F. T. Ogunsola, congratulating the inductees, their teachers and parents for the success story of the new inducted Medical and Dental Doctors. He said that the College of Medicine of the University has a pedigree for training sound graduates, which made possible by the caliber of academic and non-teaching staff paraded by the institution. He expounded that the inducted Medical and Dental Doctors were privileged to have been trained by some of the best hands that can be found in anywhere in the world. He urged the inductees to be good ambassadors of the College and impact positively on the larger society as professionals.
In his speech, Professor Chris Bode, Chief Medical Director, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) enjoined the inducted doctors to go into the world and lift the banner of the CMUL higher anywhere they go as they have been thoroughly trained. The CMD who was represented by Dr. Femi Fasanmade, Chairman, Medical Advisory Council (CMAC), noted that the young doctors graduating from the College have privileges of having passed through the best minds in both CMUL and LUTH are regarded as those few that are chosen among many to become qualified doctors. The Provost, Professor F. T. Ogunsola, who also represented the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon Ade Bello FAEng, congratulated the family and friends of the set of graduating Medical and Dental surgeons noting that the inducted medical and dental doctors by their training have been given the tools to actually put their passion into action.
She enjoined the graduating medical and dental surgeons to see their celebration of exit from the College as being a sent-forth to the world as combat troops to fight ill health and protect the Nigerian people from the trauma, pestilences and diseases of life styles; which today, more than ever the world is battling disease on many fronts.
In his Lecture at the occasion, Dr. Jide Idris, Commissioner for Health, Lagos State, implored the newly inducted Medical and Dental Surgeons to braze up with Modern Medicine, which according to him is moving at a fast rate noting that the nation’s health system has not kept pace with the growth and innovations such as genomic Medicine, Immunotherapy, robotic medicine that are major drivers in modern times.
According to him, the public patients and service consumers are now better informed and become much more active participants in the healthcare system due to the Information Technology and attendant digital revolution which is having a very significant impact on the context in which its system is managed.
The seasoned Health administrator enjoined the newly inducted doctors to arm themselves with the Cardinal Principles to being good Ambassador for the Health Profession by examining the three (3) basic tenets: Teamwork, Leadership and Professionalism. He admonished the newly qualified medical Practitioners to imbibe the spirit of teamwork as one of the step towards becoming members of the Health Family, which is geared towards benefiting the patients. He added that such teamwork required conscious efforts, compromise and understanding as all teams have roles and responsibilities that are routinely geared towards supporting the team’s function.The highlight of the event was the Oath Taking and presentation of certificates to the graduating Medical and Dental Surgeons, which was presided over by the Provost, Prof. Ogunsola. There was also the presentation of Prizes and Awards for some of the Inductees for their exemplary performances in the Medical/Dental Programmes among whom are Dr. Adeoye, John Ademola (BDS) who won prizes in 7 categories, Dr. Ogunmola, Isaac Omolade who won prizes in 5 categories and Dr. Windapo, Oluwakemi Bolanle (MBBS), who won prizes in 4 categories. Present at the event are Prof. F. E. A. Lesi, Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Prof. F. B. Akinsola, Director, Students’ Affairs; Prof. O. O. Sofola, Representative, Dean, Mr. N. O. A. Lawal, Director of Finance and Mr. N. I. Sobande, Director of Engineering Services among others.
