The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria has disclaimed a fake doctor identified to be Mr. Sunday Oppa who was sentenced to a one year prison term by the Kaduna State High Court sometimes last year December. The association has called on the public to disregard the claims that the said person is a member of their noble profession, saying that there is more than a prove to show that Mr. Sunday Oppa was never a member of AMLSN.

 

According to a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of AMLSN Kaduna State Branch Mr. Kantiyok C.M.D said that the insinuations and linkage of the culprit to the Medical Lab Science is embarrassing to their profession.

 

"A lot of people and professional bodies especially Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and Association Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) have shown serious interest in the case for different reasons. The Medical Laboratory Scientists are more interested in the case because the man sentenced was said to be a "Laboratory Scientist".

 

"Insinuations and linkage of the culprit to our profession (Medical Lab Science) came as a surprise to both the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) and the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN). This is because no Medical Laboratory Scientist is licensed to treat a patient but to carryout diagnostic tests on clinical specimens that will provide information that will assist the clinicians on prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases etc", the statement stated.

 

During the facts finding mission of the association to the Kaduna Prisons, Mr. Sunday, the culprit had confessed that he was never a member of the association, admitting that he had never confided in anybody to have been a member of the association either presently or in the past.

 

"I am not a Medical Laboratory Scientists, I did not tell anybody that I am one, I am not your member, go and check your record, and you will not see my name or any registration information about me", the culprit confessed.

 

Explaining further, the group stated that with this confession, it is clear that Mr. Sunny Oppa was not a member of Medical Laboratory Scientist and he should not be addressed as one.

 

"Impersonation and or quackery are criminal offences as both offences contravene the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) Act 11 of 2003", the group explained.
