Crisis Rocks NMA Edo Following Fraud Allegation

A new wave of crisis is rocking the Edo State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association NMA following alleged misappropriation and embezzlement of funds belonging to the association by its former state chairman.

Also at the centre of the crisis was the recent suspension of its principal members, which pitched some aggrieved members against the body’s leadership, thereby causing acrimony and tension in the running of the affairs of the association.

According to a statement signed by Dr. Ujaddughe Moses, a member of the association and Coordinator, Edo Central Zone of the NMA, which was made available to newsmen in Benin, the members alleged that a former chairman of the association; Dr. Emmanuel Ighodaro, who is now under investigation by the NMA Disciplinary Committee, was allegedly found guilty of several offences by the committee, including illegal withdrawal and embezzlement of N6, 000, 000.
The money was said to have been allegedly collected by the former chairman of the body as an unauthorised loan from a new generation bank (name withheld) and withdrawn from Edo NMA’s account after his tenure.

In his reaction to the allegation, Ighodaro yesterday dismissed the allegations as the handiwork of his enemies. He said the allegations were the handiwork of his arch-enemies and rivals, who were bent on denting his image, which he said he has built over the years as a past chairman of the state branch of the NMA.

Ujaddughe, who alleged that the said loan was credited to the association’s account on July 31, 2014, the same day his executive committee was dissolved, alleged that “between August 1, 2014 and August 5, 2014 after his tenure, he withdrew more than N6, 000,000 from the association’s account before handing over the account.”
