Health workers at Dala orthopedic hospital Kano have threatened to commence a warning strike beginning from Monday, May 8, 2017 if the management of the hospital fails to remit the money it deducted from their salary last month.
Chairman of Nurses and Midwives Association of Dala Orthopedic hospital Kano chapter, Mr Adotse Emmanuel, disclosed this on Thursday while leading members of the association in protest over deduction of their salaries.
Emmanuel said members of the association were facing series of challenges in discharging their duties in the hospital.
“We are facing shortage of manpower, nonpayment of our call duty allowances and our members are not enjoying the three month free-retirement leave in this hospital,” he said.
Also, the Chairman of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JUHESU) in the hospital, Karibu Lawal, said union had summoned a congress meeting to be held today (yesterday) at 3pm where they would decide the next line of action to be taken in respect of the deductions. Lawal described the deduction of the workers’ salaries as unfortunate and uncalled-for, lamenting that the union had entered agreement with management of the hospital that no worker should be intimidated after the 7-day warning strike done in December last year.
“Unfortunately, the management of the hospital has deducted some money from the April’s salaries of our members. Seven day payments were deducted from their salaries. Our members worked from October-December last year without salaries and they did not go for strike until towards the end of December but only to have deductions from their salaries. This is unfair,” he lamented.
When contacted, the Director Administration of the hospital, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, confirmed deductions, but said it was done based on a circulars sent to the hospital from the Federal Ministry of Health, office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and that of the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), directing the management of the hospital to effect the deduction.
Ibrahim explained that according to the circulars, any worker that goes for strike should have his/her salaries deducted equivalent to the number of days he/she did not come for work.
“The management of the hospital has deducted money from the salaries of residence doctors in January this year. But because our IPPS server was faulty for sometimes, we cannot effect deductions on the salaries of other health workers until April,” he said.
The director said five days payment was deducted from the salaries of residence doctors, seven days for members of medical health workers, five days for nurses and midwives and two days for members of senior staff of health workers union.
He said there was another strike by the members of Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) which lasted for 28 days and the management would deduct from their salaries.
The director, who appealed to the health workers to sheath their swords and suspend the proposed warning strike, warned that any worker that go for strike would have some deductions from his salary.
