A consultant at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Dr. Ifedayo Odeniyi, has advised diabetic patients to adopt healthy lifestyles so as to prevent complications that arise from poor management of the disease.
He spoke at the relaunch of Glucovance by Merck Pharmaceutical in Lagos. Odeniyi noted that research had proved that patients who controlled their blood sugar by eating balanced diets and exercising regularly often spent less on drugs and treatment.
"Patients must manage their condition through healthy living. Eating foods in the right portions and burning calories through regular exercise. "However, if patients present late symptoms as they do in this part of the world, apart from having high blood glucose, we will be treating complications, such as leg ulcers which will make the treatment more expensive," he said.
The diabetes care specialist urged doctors to tailor their services according to their patients' needs by helping them to set weight loss, exercise and life style modification targets.
Speaking at the event, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, United Kingdom, and a representative of Merck Serono, Dr. Harry Howlett, said that apart from lifestyle modification, patients must also use the right medicines to manage their glucose levels.
According to him, Metformin and Glibenclamide, which Glucovance is made from, are efficient drug components for managing type II diabetes.
He said, "Adherence is important in tackling diabetes. One of the ways to arrest the disease is by putting up a clean habit on every front of your treatment."
