One woman is said to die of breast cancer every 68 seconds and an average, every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer globally.
Dr. Muhammad Kabir Saleh, Head of Department of Radiology, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, disclosed this when he presented a lecture during the World Radiographers/Radiology Day with theme “Early Diagnosis and Management of Breast Cancer: The imaging Perspective” on the 8th November, 2016.
Dr. M.K. Saleh said, breast cancer is the most common malignancy affecting women in many parts of world which accounts for 25% of female cancers and the second most common cause of death from cancer of the lungs.
He added that, the incidence rates are high in more developed countries but low in less developed countries. They also account for less than 1% of breast cancers with an estimate of 2,600 of them diagnosed annually. He further said, review of breast cancers in Nigeria revealed at a peak age of occurrence between 40-49 years with mean age of 47½ years in South West while North-East Nigeria is 41-50 years with mean age of 44 years while in Kano, North West Nigeria, the peak of occurrence is 35-39 years with mean age of 46½ years.
He said, early detection by women screening remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control and called on the hospital management for a dedicated breast cancer clinic with composition of specialists of Radiologist, Breast surgeons, Pathologists, Plastic Surgeons, Radiographers, Nurses, Psychologist/Psychiatrists, and Medical Social Workers.
Declaring the day opened the Chief Medical Director of Aminu kano Teaching Hospital, Professor Aminu Zakari Mohammed urged healthcare Professionals to emulate the sensitization campaigns to women on self-examination before coming to hospital for further screening.
He then promised to form the breast management team who will be responsible for managing the breast and other –related illness in the dedicated clinic, as the hospital management is about investing on Radiology Oncology facility through Public Private Partnership.
