The Edo Deputy Governor, Mr Philip Shiabu, has called for preventive medicine practice to reduce high death rate, especially child mortality in Nigeria.
Shiabu made this call on Tuesday in Benin when he inaugurated the 3rd Biennial General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Nigerian Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the programme is "Controlling infectious diseases, as a key to sustainable deyvelopment in a challenged economy . The deputy governor, who was also the chairman of the conference, expressed regrets that many children died yearly due to preventable diseases and lack of adequate medical centres to take care of emergencies.
He said that the present administration had provided functional General Hospitals in all Local Governments of the state to reduce the burden on the few ones available.
Shiabu called on the conference to make the communiqué from the conference available to the State Government in order to improve the health sector in the state.
On his part, the President, Nigerian Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases, Prof. Osawaru Oviawe, called on government at all levels to have well equipped epidemic centres to effectively tackle any outbreak.
Oviawe argued that the country should not always wait for disaster to happen before taking steps to tackle it.
