The Acting Chief Medical Director of the Ekiti State University Teaching hospital, Ado Ekiti, Dr Abidemi Solomon, has lamented the dearth of funds for research in teaching hospitals in Nigeria, saying this has made it imperative for governments to institute
special funds and support in that regard.
Solomon said, “health is evolving. The science of health is something that is always evolving and it becomes very important that research must be conducted on a regular basis in order to learn the best way to handle the particular health needs of the people from time to time.”
The medical expert lamented that lack of adequate funding posed an obstacle to efforts aimed at researching deeply in the nation’s tertiary health care institutions.
he said: “We are trying in Nigeria, but we can do better. We are trying in the sense that we have been able to have innovative researches in the country, but we actually have not
gotten there. There is no very much conducive environment for research.
“Researchers here are just scratching the surfaces. They are not really going into the deep part of the research like their counterparts in other parts of the world because funding is a major issue and the enabling environment is not really readily available.”
