Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir Elrufai has commended the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development, DFID, for investing in the health of mothers and children and making a difference in the livelihood of the citizens of the state.
El-rufai made the commendation last week in Kaduna during an inspection, during his visit to the Badarawa Primary Health Center which was renovated with funding from the UK THE MINISTER of Health, Professor. Isaac Adewole has urged the Management of the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau in Zamfara State to urgently activate a case finding mission to stem the current outbreak of meningitis in the state.
Adewole gave this directive during his visit to the hospital on Monday and said, “Set up a rapid response team and let them go and find cases.’’
“This is not the time to wait for referrals before you treat. You should go out and search for the cases.”
He called on the hospital to assist in strengthening the Primary Health Care system in the state in order to curtail the current meningitis outbreak and future occurrences.
The Minister further recalled the picture of agirl who received treated on the floor in one of the state Primary Health Centres which made the front page of a recent edition of a National Newspaper describing it as unacceptable. “What I saw in The News Paper is unacceptable. They are human beings and not animals and we must treat them with dignity.”
He promised that the ministry would support the hospital to ensure that Zamfara people access healthcare and also halt unnecessary deaths in the state. government through the Maternal Newborn and Child Health programme, MNCH2, in collaboration with Solar Nigeria programme.
The 29-bed facility is equipped with solar panels to provide 24 hours electricity and comprehensive health services to about 30,000 people living within 9 communities in the Badarawa ward of Kaduna North local government.
Matron in charge, Jumai Haruna who conducted the governor around, disclosed that the facility has witnessed increased demand for services since the renovation exercise was completed, further called on the governor to provide security for the solar panels and a borehole for the facility.
One of the beneficiaries of the facility, Bilikisu Haruna said, “The hospital looks good and the environment has changed. We really appreciate the sponsors.”
Project Manager with Solar Nigeria, Tinyan Ogiehoi said, “Without this collaboration we would not have achieved impact,“ “MNCH2 assisted us with the selection of the sites, adding that the solar panels areguaranteed to last for 25 years.
Nigeria country head of DFID, Ben Mellor appreciated Governor El-rufai’s commitment at improving health outcomes in his state also disclosed that the Badarawa PHC is one of over 115 facilities supported by DFID, adding that the facility has witnessed increased turn out and utilization of the servicesprovided.
The facility authorities said that the Badarawa PHC recorded increased turnout of antenatal care attendance by 7.7%, deliveries by 35.5%, routine immunization by 11.9% and 25% for family planning acceptors within the last three months.
