A fertility expert has raised the alarm that many medical practitioners in Nigeria do not know about Endometriosis, a factor largely blamed for missed diagnosis in millions of Nigerian women who suffer this condition.
To this end, Dr. Abayomi Ajayi, an obstetrics and gynaecologist and managing director of the Nordica Fertility Centre, who made the disclosure unveiled plans to fund the training of some Nigerian doctors with a view to raise awareness about the Endometriosis. The aim is to fill the knowledge gap as well as raise the quality of life for persons suffering Endometriosis. Ajayi spoke during the 2017 Annual Endometriosis Awareness Walk, which took place in Lagos at the weekend.
The walk which has become an annual event, began from the City Mall Onikan through Awolowo Road to Muri Okunola Park in Victoria Island. Endometriosis is a medical condition that occurs when the lining of the uterus, called the endometrium, grows in other places, such as the fallopian tubes, ovaries or along the pelvis.
When that lining breaks down, like the regular lining in the uterus that produces the menstruation, it has nowhere to go. Explaining the purpose of the walk, Ajayi said, “That is why we are raising awareness annually so that doctors within the environment can be sponsored to get necessary training.”
