Australian professors are on the brink of developing a vaccine for asthma, which could see sufferers do away with the puffer all together.
Professor Wayne Thomas, from the Telethon Institute in Perth, has been working with microscopic dust mites for over 30 years.
His world leading research has found that dust mites digestive enzymes are a major cause of asthma attacks among sufferers.
'We were the first in the world to use genetic engineering to look at allergens,' Professor Thomas told 7 News.
'With this new knowledge there will be no need for the use of puffers.'
With funding from the Telethon Institute, the findings mean experts are one step closer to developing a vaccine against the disease.
