The FCT Administration (FCTA) has tasked nursing mothers in the territory on greater commitment to promoting, protecting and supporting exclusive breastfeeding practices.
The Acting Executive Secretary, FCT Primary Health Care Development Board, Dr Matthew Ashikeni, stated this at a media briefing on the 2017 World Breastfeeding Week in Abuja.
He said it has been scientifically proven that breastfeeding within one hour after birth and exclusively during the first six months of life yielded tremendous health benefits to the new born baby. He decried the rate of breastfeeding in Nigeria as very low at 25% as at 2014 and said exclusive breastfeeding of babies for the first six months after birth increased the intelligence quotient (IQ) of the child.
Dr Ashikeni said the board would continue to train members and carry out orientation across different communities in the six area councils of the territory.
He said the high rates of infant and young child deaths and illness in Nigeria have been attributed to malnutrition resulting from poor infant and young child feeding among other preventable causes.
