Experts have called on the Federal Government and to urgently review the current Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences Programme (BMLS).
They made the call yesterday in Abuja during the maiden education summit organized by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN).
A former Vice Chancellor of Ambrose All University, Ekpoma, Prof. Dennis Agbonlahor said challenges have been identified with the five-year Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences programme which the country has been using for fifteen years.
He said the current curriculum was not harmonized in terms of content delivery in the various universities, students specialize at 500 level instead of after their first degree, and that there was deficiency in practical content, among others. “Students should specialize during their Masters and not at undergraduate level,” he said.
Agbonlahor said the current MLSCN fellowship is defective and obsolete, adding that the council should rather come up with a three year fellowship programme that runs in designated hospital laboratories as resident medical laboratory scientists.
