The Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has assured midwives that their work will be recognised as they become part of the reform program that the Health and Medical Services Ministry is undergoing.
He made the statement while addressing concerns by a group of midwives from the Lautoka Hospital yesterday.
"Midwives are under the new specialised category," he said.
"We have midwives that will get a 49.52 per cent pay rise while some have even gone as far to getting 70 per cent.
"That is after they have gone through the open merit review system and the job evaluation exercises."
Lautoka Hospital midwife Mayvis Verma said midwives would be signing registered nurse contracts under the reforms.
"We've been told that there will be acting posts for midwives too and the deadline for us to apply for these positions is supposed to be next week," she said.
"The concern here is if we the midwives sign the contract of the registered nurses then the practice of ours in the unit becomes one of a registered nurse."
She said midwives were a specialised post in a hospital unit.
She added that a vocational license a midwife held was also a factor that made their positions specialised.
