First Lady Mrs Aisha Buhari has hailed National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) for its efforts in sensitising women on AIDS-related issues especially mother-tochild transmission.
Mrs Buhari said that the awareness NACA has created across the country has gone a long way in ensuring that mother-to-child transmission HIV has been drastically reduced.
Speaking in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, during an advocacy event on maternal, newborn and child health week, Mrs Buhari said that what NACA has done especially at the grassroots has helped in reducing HIV/AIDS related cases.
The first lady and Vicar Hope Foundation collaborated with NACA on the health week programme. Mrs Buhari, represented by Mrs Tessy Maina, said that the work NACA has been doing through messages in local languages and jingles has made the work of her foundation easier.
The wife of the President said that she is very passionate about maternal and child health related cases, which she has carried along to the nooks and crannies of the country.
She said, “As a mother I am concerned about the welfare of mother and child health-related issues which has made me to take the case to all the nooks and crannies of the country with the hope of reducing the mortality rate to the barest minimum”
“I am happy that wives of governors of the country have keyed into this programme, especially Mrs Nkechi Ikpeazu, the wife of Abia State governor, who has been campaigning for the reduction of maternal and child HIV/AIDS issues”.
“Mrs Ikpeazu and her husband have been very committed in ensuring that the success and reduction of mother and child transferring of HIV/AIDS is sustained and they have been working hard even as a lot is yet to be done”.
Mrs Buhari noted that the Vicar Hope Foundation which is the pet project of the Abia governor’s wife has been working hard to ensure that no woman dies during child delivery as well as no child dies when being born”.
In her welcome speech the wife of Abia state governor, Mrs Ikpeazu said that as a mother that she is aware that every parent desires the best for their children, as no parent will willfully transfer a medical burden to her child.
Mrs Ikpeazu noted that providing HIV/AIDS services will go a long way to make the people of the state healthier and also reduce the statistics, adding that what cannot be captured in data and statistics is the emotional pain of parents who at birth of their child has already begun to fail by not providing the enablement to protect their child. She said, “I have worked extensively with sickle cell patients and I know the psychological and emotional pains the above situation can wreak on a family, so one need not go far in the case of HIV/AIDS on a loved child”.
The wife of Abia governor said that she is very grateful to the county’s First Lady, Mrs Buhari for introducing and championing the war against maternal and child transferring of HIV/AIDS, “This reflects the nature of her humanity as a living and care giver to Nigerians”.
She said, “This is not the first time Mrs Buhari and Future Assured is intervening in the matters of Abia state, there has been occasions such as when she distributed food and nutritional supplements to pregnant and nursing mothers and food supplies to over 2,000 indigent families in our state”.
Mrs Ikpeazu said that the warmth of the outreach of the President’s wife is something that many families have benefitted from in Abia, “As the wife of Abia governor with Vicar Hope Foundation, we have worked with collaborators to achieve a lot of mileage in several areas which we appreciate what the value chain brings”.
Declaring the advocacy open the state governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu said that as a health loving governor that he has explored all areas that are within his capacity to help the health sector which has been recognised across the country and beyond.
Ikpeazu said that he has not been resting even after the much he has done in the health sector, “As I have a lot of dreams in my head on how to improve the health sector and also reduce the maternal and child mortality rate in our state”.
The governor who was represented by his health commissioner, Dr John Ahukannna said that he is working to ensure that prescription of drugs for the telehealth patients could be printed out in any part of the country for the patients.
